OVERVIEW

Natural Flood Management (NFM) is a nature-based approach to reducing flood risk by working with the natural landscape, rather than relying solely on traditional engineering solutions such as concrete barriers or flood walls. It involves restoring and enhancing natural processes to slow down, store, or redirect water during heavy rainfall events. This can include techniques such as planting trees, restoring wetlands, creating leaky dams, and constructing attenuation ponds to temporarily hold back water.

WHY IT MATTERS

The benefits of NFM extend beyond just flood protection. These interventions also help improve water quality, increase biodiversity, enhance soil health, and contribute to climate resilience. By working with the land and its natural features, NFM provides a more sustainable and cost-effective approach to managing flood risk, while also delivering environmental and community benefits.

DELIVERY

NFM interventions are designed to work with natural features across catchments, implemented in partnership with landowners, communities, and environmental organisations. Through collaborative planning and practical measures, NFM projects deliver flood protection while also creating healthier ecosystems and stronger community resilience.
